So like weekends, vacations take on a new meaning when you’re in lockdown. I tried my working hat trick though instead of a red beret I put on a straw vacation hat that people wear when they actually go on vacation to places like to Amalfi Coast or the south of France. In my case I put on my hat when I go on my balcony to read my Kindle positioning myself in the warm afternoon sun.
Since having the kids we always try to do an “all inclusive” with a club for kids where they take them for most of the day to do activities and we do things like sleep. In lockdown mode this hasn’t changed for the kids but it has for me because it’s me providing the all-inclusive. Meals, dishes, house-keeping, activities and all.
The day starts out when my son wakes up and craws into bed with us demanding breakfast. Half-awake I make him what he orders knowing full well that he probably won’t eat it and he’s just testing his vocabulary for various types of food. What he really eats comes after, when his sister wakes and decides what she wants and he wants that prepared in the exact same way if I want to avoid starting off the day with my kids fighting over a bowl or a spoon.
Afterwards I put on a pot of coffee and review the activities I will do with the kids that day. To get my socializing dose I check my emails and look at Facebook as long as I can until my kids start doing things like fighting over the remote or coming to me with so called “injuries” of which of course the fault always lies in the sibling. This is when I start the activity.
If I’m lucky I can keep them occupied until 11am when the “educational” t.v. program comes on. As they watch I prepare lunch. When it’s ready I coax them away from the t.v. and to the table where we eat as a family. Afterwards I clean up and if I’m lucky my husband takes the kids outside and get in an episode of Lucifer or do yoga.
When they get back hopefully they’ll be worn out enough for a nap and I can take one as well. More often than not they’re wide awake and are usually hungry so we do their afternoon snack. I drink a much needed coffee. Despite the coffee I usually can’t muster enough energy for another activity and end up putting on a movie so I can read Sedaris or Eugenides and wear my vacation hat effectively clocking out for the day.
So yeah if you consider vacation taking a break, spending time with family, getting in the occasional leisurely activity and wearing a vacation straw hat, then I would say it’s a success.
