So ever see a hotel in the middle of a shopping center and ask yourself:  Who stays there?  Well we did for our second week of vacation only I didn’t realize it because due to covid and some last minute changes I had to quickly book something that checked the following boxes:

1.      Kitchen

2.      Swimming pool

3.      Good rating

4.      Cheap(ish)

5.      Could cancel last minute

At first it is rather depressing to realize you will be spending a third of your vacation in the middle of the shopping center but it actually turned out great.  The residence was run by IBIS hotel and there was a heated pool, good restaurant, and playground for the kids I could get to at any time due to their fickle nature.  We did that during the day and due to the small room got us out and about doing visits during the evening to avoid crowds and covid.  The most pleasant surprise was the view from our residence:

 

Almost felt like we were in the countryside.

So the first week of our vacation was spent in a place where you could def spend a lockdown:

 So I saw this this morning:

"Le chef de l'État a évoqué, le 20 août, des « perspectives raisonnables » d'obtenir un vaccin « dans les prochains mois »"

If I had to translate it myself I would say it means that the French president has said on August 20th that there is a "reasonable possibility" to have a vaccine in the "coming months". 

I wonder how the academy française would define "reasonable possiblity" and "coming months".

So I thought perhaps I’d feel safer biking if I knew the rules instead of applying a blanket rule of "avoid crashing into anything".  

Turns out the rules are really just hints to keep you alive.  Highlights:

-        Be bold and maintain your cycling line in the road if it would be dangerous for a car to overtake you. 

-        At junctions, pull slightly forward of other vehicles so that you can be seen. 

-        Be wary of car doors which can open suddenly and of children who can jump out from between 2 vehicles.

-        In zones where the speed is limited to 30 and in pedestrian-priority zones, bikes can cycle in both directions. This allows you to benefit from a greater visibility and to avoid main roads and junctions and make your journey simpler. 

-        When cycling around corners, keep to the right as cars will only see you at the last minute. 

-        Be especially careful when a lorry drives past: the air vacuum might destabilize you and make you lost balance.

-        At a junction, never position yourself at the side of a lorry or bus in their blind-spot. Make yourself seen. 

Yeah not sure if biking in the city is less dangerous than public transport and covid.
